‘Foreward into the Past’ is Skyclad’s 13th studio album. So the concept of the number 13 being unlucky was researched and considered and indeed, ‘unlucky’, for some was the album’s working title. The number 13 is, therefore, significant because that is the number of tracks planned for the album from the start – 10 songs (like the Decameron) and intro, an outro and an instrumental. These tracks were intended to be laid out on the points of a tridecagon (13 side polygon) or the hour marks of a 13 hours clock (to get 13 o’clock).
The other main starting point for the conceptualisation of the album was using Boaccaccio’s ‘Decameron’ as a model. Where there is a a ‘tale a day’ that follows a certain theme. The ‘themes’ that were to be used here however were the themes of thrash metal albums of the 1980’s and early 90’s – including Skyclad’s. These normally focussed on (nuclear) warfare. The environment/pollution, (anti) religion, big (corrupt) business and so on.
Όταν διαβάζω στο οπισθόφυλλο του booklet ένα τέτοιο αμπελοφιλοσοφικό αφήγημα για το άλμπουμ, καταλαβαίνω τα εξής πράγματα:
- Μην περιμένω επιτυχίες του παρελθόντος, δύσκολα να παιχτεί τέτοια μπάλα ξανά χωρίς Walkyier.
- Θα υπάρχουν όμως μουσικές/στιχουργικές αναφορές σε παλιούς Skyclad, γιατί τέτοιες μπάντες είναι καταδικασμένες να ζουν στο παρελθόν.
- Θα περιέχει τουλάχιστον ένα χρυσό δεκάρι κομμάτι κι ένα που θα πω... "μιεχ".
- Μπαίνει ακόμη ένα κεφάλαιο στην τεράστια ιστορία της μπάντας, γεγονός που έχει τη σημασία του άσχετα με την ποιόν του άλμπουμ.
- Το άλμπουμ θα γαμάει γιατί είναι Skyclad ρε νιαμού.
